We have developed a variety of running routes for our guests to challenge themselves as well as some walking routes that take in some of the beauty that Ballina is proud of.
The most popular run is "The 12 K Canter" which is split into three legs. First is the 2 km stretch from the motel, to the Ballina RSL where you divert to the boardwalk to enjoy the maritime activities as you continue your exercise. From here, you complete the 4 km leg, past the Maritime museum and Ballina Swimming Pool with its enticing slide along the Richmond River and Shaw Bay to finally have a breather at the Lighthouse Beach SLSC and its stunning Beach. For those who want a serious cardio workout another kilometre on, and up over the hill is Shelly Beach and the Belle General, a lovely place to stop for cool drink or some breakfast.
Follow the path you took back to the Islander seeing everything from a different perspective then jump in our salt water pool to cool off.
Maps available from our Guest Services Team at the main desk.
The Islander recognizes that dogs are considered part of our guests’ family and welcomes them to our motel. There are however only THREE (3) pet friendly rooms available so we advise you to make your booking well in advance. Room type and location are restricted so please ring us prior to booking to check room availability. *Pet Friendly rooms are not available during Peak and Shoulder Holiday periods (Easter, Christmas and School Holidays) please contact us to check dates. There is a $25.00 pet fee charge which is added to your account. This fee is to cover “flea bombing” the room on your departure which is required after every stay. Unfortunately because of room design we cannot accommodate other pets, including cats.
All dog friendly rooms will be fitted with a baby gate on your arrival to ensure your dog is kept within the designated tiled area (This does not included the bathroom areas). A $125.00 bond is held for instances were the dog has been allowed on the furniture, bed or carpeted area. Dog dander creates allergic reactions in susceptible people and the $125.00 covers the cost of steam cleaning the furniture, bed and carpet. The bond will be refunded at checkout once a room inspection has been done and it has been determined that no additional servicing is required. We are sure you will understand that the wellbeing of all guests is paramount, and you would expect us to eliminate any potential risks to a guest’s health.
We understand not all dogs will find staying in the tiled area acceptable and in such cases we are, unfortunately, unable to offer you and your pet accommodation.
To ensure all our guests have a safe, comfortable and allergy free room, we do not allow dogs in any other rooms and a fee of $125.00 will be charged if a dog is kept aor taken into a non-dog friendly room to cover the cost of the additional servicing this room will require.
Please note it is important to respect other motel guests. Should we receive a complaint from a guest, your pet will not be allowed to stay on the property. For the safety and comfort of all our guests, you are kindly requested to follow some simple rules during your stay with your pet:
DOG FRIENDLY BEACHES Dogs are permitted on the following beaches:

In addition to the beaches above, there are three designated parkland areas within Ballina Shire where you can exercise your dog off leash:

In line with our values of making the wellbeing of all our guests our priority the Islander is designated as Non-Smoking Accommodation.
There are however two designated smoking areas to accommodate the needs of guests who wish to smoke. We provide this for your convenience and ask that you respect our other guests rights when smoking. We recommend that you advise our Guest Services Team when booking that you would like to have a room near a designated smoking area.
In the event a guest smokes or permits smoking in a motel room a Deep Cleaning and Deodorizing of $125.00 will be posted to the guest account upon checkout or processed as a late charge on the guest account if the violation is reported after the guest has departed.
